Temple and underarm measurements take skin temperatures, not core body temperatures, so they can be influenced by external factors such as sweating or drafts. The eardrum, however, shares its blood supply with the temperature control center of the brain, so changes in body temperature are reflected sooner and more accurately in the ear than in other places.
